Essex Boys & Girls Clubs

EBGC Hall of fame title card (1)

Michael Watson’s story is one of determination, talent, and resilience, making him a fitting figure for the Essex Boys and Girls Clubs Hall of Fame. From his early days in London to his rise as a professional boxer, Watson’s journey embodies the values of discipline, courage, and perseverance.

Michael Watson discovered boxing as a teenager at the Crown and Manor Boxing Club, a club that is affiliated to EBGC to this day. By the age of fourteen, he was already showing promise, winning the London Schools under-71kg title in 1980. His amateur record was outstanding, with 20 wins and only 2 losses. He also won our NABC title as an amateur, showing he was the best in his age and weight in the UK.

Watson turned professional in October 1984, debuting at just 19 years old. Known by the nickname “The Force,” he fought in the middleweight and super-middleweight divisions. Over nearly seven years, he built a record of 30 professional fights, with 25 wins (21 by knockout), 4 losses, and 1 draw. His crowning achievement came in 1989, when he captured the Commonwealth Middleweight Title, which he held until 1991. Watson also challenged three times for world titles, facing some of the era’s greatest fighters, including Nigel Benn and Chris Eubank.

Tragically, Watson’s career was cut short in September 1991, during his bout with Chris Eubank for the WBO super-middleweight title. After dominating much of the fight, Watson suffered a devastating brain injury following a knockout in the final round. He spent 40 days and 40 nights in a coma and had 7 surgeries undertaken by Peter Hamlin, who, to this day is still a great friend of Michaels. He awoke when he heard the voice of Muhamad Ali, who had visited Barts Hospital to see him. His survival and long recovery became a testament to his strength and spirit. Though his professional boxing career ended that night, Watson’s legacy grew even stronger. He became an inspirational figure, later awarded an MBE for services to disability sport, and continues to be celebrated as a “people’s champion.”

Michael has continued to support EBGC, and was inducted into our Hall of Fame at our Class D Boxing Finals at Braxted Park in 2025, receiving an ovation from everyone in the room.
