Our Projects

Our projects for young people are run with a variety of partners, including schools, the Youth Service, Catch22, the police and local councils.

If you are a young person who would like to join one of our projects, or if you're an organisation who would like us to run an existing project or design a new project for a particular outcome,
please contact davidh@essexboysandgirlsclubs.org

National Citizen Service (NCS)

NCS gives 16 year olds (young people coming out of year 11) the chance to take part in a summer programme that is challenging, fun and develops skills and confidence. We are delivering the programme in partnership with Catch22.

Our program consists of...

The Away Residential – a week of adventurous outdoor activities and mental challenges at High Row, the EBGC outdoor pursuits centre in the Lake District, designed to be challenging but fun and to help the group learn how to work well as a team.

The Home Residential – This is also a residential at Stubbers Adventure Centre in Upminster during the week after the Lake District trip. This will be a chance to learn new skills and put these to the test, take part in fun activities and to plan delivery of their Community Project.

The Social action or Community Project Week - a final week where teams deliver the Community Project. 30 hours of volunteering is the goal.

The Celebration – a celebration or ‘graduation’ to be held at a prestige venue in September.

So, do you want a summer of fun?

In 2012, we are running programs for young people from the Chelmsford, Basildon, Southend, Thurrock and Uttlesford Districts. Look out for us in the next  few weeks at your school or club, as we're out recruiting for Year 11 students to join us this summer.

If you want to get involved in this fantastic opportunity contact Keith on 01245 264 783 or email keithc@essexboysandgirlsclubs.org

Jack Petchey Foundation Club Support Scheme

This pilot scheme is backed by The Jack Petchey Foundation and the YMCA George Williams College.

It is designed to discover club members' views about their club and then work with the clubs and members to take action to make necessary improvements. Through a variety of workshops and courses to develop leadership and teamwork capabilities in the young people, the end result is club members taking true ownership of the running of their club, ensuring the sustainability of the clubs. To date the scheme has been well received by both club leaders and young people.

The young leaders in the clubs have the chance to complete their Level 2 Pre-Graduates Course in
Informal and Community Education run by the YMCA George Williams College.

Since the beginning of March 2011, 12 clubs in the south of the EBGC region have been taking part in our the scheme.  These are AB Phab, Crown & Manor, East Tilbury Youth Club, Frenford Clubs, Linford Wanderers, Loughton Youth Project, Rainham Royals, Seabrook Rise, SNAC, St. Cedds, St. Stephens Youth Club and Theydon Bois Youth Club.

As a result of the scheme in September 2011 we welcome Ryan Keen as a trainee at EBGC.

We hope for the scheme to be extended to other clubs in our region soon. If you wish to be part of the scheme please contact Jamie Drummond on 01245 264783 or jamied@essexboysandgirlsclubs.org

You can also follow the project on Facebook.

The Respect Project

The Respect Project is a four-month programme that is divided into activity days, evening sessions, an outdoor activity day, a week-long residential experience of outdoor adventurous activities, and final presentation evening.

Aimed at boys and girls in school year 9, the young people are nominated by their school to take part in an activity day at Stubbers Adventure Centre. Up to 20 pupils will get a chance to take part in something like raft building, tunnelling or team challenges and they will have been recommended by their school because maybe they are struggling a bit with the education system, have little self confidence or low self esteem.  After the initial day at Stubbers 20 pupils are then invited back from the schools that have taken part, to attend a second activity day.  This activity day allows the pupils to mix with other young people from different schools and begin to work as a team on the High Ropes course and the Challenge Course.

After the activity days a number of the young people are invited to embark on the rest of the project. Over 8 weeks the group of young people will take part in life skills sessions facilitated by project staff covering topics such as team work, drugs awareness, peer pressure and handling conflict. Also during this time the young people will take part in a day out in a woodland forest or other outdoor setting to learn skills that will be valuable to them for the week long residential trip in the Lake District.

The week residential trip is based at EBGC’s High Row residential centre in the Lake District. Young People will be instructed by qualified Mountain Leaders as they explore the hills and mountains of the area and gain valuable experiences and skills that will live with them for a long time. The project has seen countless young people return from the Lake District with a new self belief and confidence to achieve higher in and out of school.

At the end of the project all the young people take part in a presentation evening, which is designed to let the participants speak about and share their experiences as well as being congratulated on their achievements.
