Club Leader Information

Useful information for those volunteering at youth clubs:

Our Service for Affiliated Clubs

Every one of the affiliated clubs in our network is assigned a Club Servicing Officer, who will visit a number of times each year to see how the club is getting on, address any questions you might have and find out about the needs of young people at the club and in the area. We prefer to liaise mainly through one member of the club staff but we are here to help and assist all volunteers. In addition the team in the Chelmsford office is available to support you during working hours. Whether you have a query about how to handle a situation, are thinking about fundraising or if you'd like to book one of our activities or centres, just get in touch on 01245 264783, or email the relevant member of the team.

Providing a Safe Environment for Young People

It is essential that a club's Committee ensures that they create and maintain a safe environment, in all aspects of the term, for their members. We will assist new and existing clubs to understand how to achieve this goal by working with them and identifying and delivering suitable training and development.

Safeguarding Young People

We expect each club to appoint a suitable person to have special responsibility for safeguarding and related child protection issues. We will assist in the development of the person alongside generalised safeguarding training for the other volunteers.

Clubs should contact suep@essexboysandgirlsclubs.org to begin the process.

Criminal Records Bureau (CRB) Checks

Adults and volunteers working with children and young people in a club environment need to be CRB checked up to Enhanced level. The implementation of the Independent Safeguarding Authority (ISA) has been suspended by the Government pending a review, which is identifying the necessary changes to it and to the CRB process.

In the meantime, the procedure for CRB checks through our service is initially for all new club volunteers to apply via Essex Boys and Girls Clubs and we will check and verify their form and evidence. Clubs will then be encouraged to appoint a suitable individual to undertake the process at the club and by trained by us in the necessary processes.

New club volunteers should contact davids@essexboysandgirlsclubs.org to begin the process.

Insurance

At is a condition of affiliation to the charity that every club holds adequate insurance. Our national network, Clubs for Young People (CYP) has appointed Lockton LLP as their approved insurance broker for their membership insurance scheme. Lockton makes the scheme exclusively available to affiliated CYP members marketed as CYP Insurance.

Fighting Crime

Youth workers from Fearless, The Crimestoppers brand for 11 to 16-year-olds, hold workshops in schools and youth clubs on crime. These sessions cover a variety of crimes, including knife crime. They also produce free Fearless knife crime posters, which you can order from the Fearless.org website.

There is also a section on the Fearless.org website dedicated to knife and gun crime. It contains non-judgemental advice for young people about the effects of knife crime and the punishments for being caught carrying a knife. Visit the Fearless pages on knife crime.

If you know someone who carries a knife, you can name them by calling Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111, or you can text as much information as you can to 88551, or you can fill in their anonymous online form.
