The development days give clubs the chance to learn about current opportunities in the region, current funding pots and top tips on successful bids as well as how clubs can work together with each other and outside partners more efficiently.
The Amateur Boxing Association of England Ltd (ABAE) is the only national governing body for boxing recognised by Sport England. The Chief Executive Officer of the ABAE, Mark Abberley was in attendance to give clubs a voice and ask any questions that they had. Mark answered questions from the floor for over an hour on how clubs can work closer to the ABA and the way forward looking towards the Whole Sport Plan for 2013-2017.
A club development workshop was delivered by Afsheen Panjalizadeh and gave attendees new ideas for recruiting new boxers and volunteers into the club and methods of keeping them there. Clubs were also encouraged to become more than just boxing clubs and were introduced to extra support groups in Essex.
Lunch was provided with the famous Sue Pell’s cakes on offer and a chance for volunteers to network with people from different clubs and share ideas. This was followed by a funding workshop delivered by Juliet Townsend. Clubs all worked on putting together proposals explaining why their own clubs should receive funding. They were then given application forms for local funds relevant to their particular club, as well as national initiatives. Some clubs then stayed on with Juliet to complete and submit applications.
The day culminated with a session on how to run successful projects such as Sportivate and NEET project as well as discussion of activity during the London 2012 including preparation for Chelmsford’s main event on the 6th July - the Olympic Torch Relay in Hyland’s Park.
Clubs then discussed how they could best use the Boxing Development Officer and find out about regular funding pots. This sparked the idea of having a quarterly newsletter, so the first one shall be published during mid-February - keep your eye out for that one!
