Clubs ring in the New Year with 5-a-side Football Tournaments
The hotly contested Essex Boys & Girls Clubs 5 a-sides were held at Riverside Ice and Leisure Centre in Chelmsford.
The U14 tournament went ahead on Thursday 29th December and involved 10 teams from Wickford Town YFC, Maldon & Tiptree YFC, Island Boys FC, St. Cedd’s and London guest teams Springfield United and Crown and Manor. The tournament was closely contested, with two pools of 5 playing off before a semi-final then final. In the first semi, the winners of pool A, Wickford Trojans, played off against the runner-up of pool B, Island Boys FC. In a tight match, Wickford Trojans eventually ran out winners by two goals to one. In the second semi, the winners of pool B, Springfield United, played off against the runners up of pool A; St. Cedd’s. A six goal thriller ended up with Springfield United emerging victorious 4-2.
Springfield United and Wickford Trojans then played out a high quality final. At half time Wickford Trojans found themselves a goal behind and threw everyone forward in an attempt to win the game. Unfortunately this left them wide open at the back and the skillful Springfield United forwards took full advantage to eventually run out winners by four goals to one - a score line that did not reflect the competitiveness of the game. As the highest placed Essex team, Wickford Trojans will progress to the Regional Finals in April.
The U16 and U19 tournaments took place in the New Year on Saturday 7th January 2012, again at Riverside. With a slightly disappointing turnout of teams compared with the U14s, it was decided to use the full hall, allowing for much more open games.
In the U16s Brentwood Athletic YFC A and B narrowly beat Island Boys FC A and B to contest a final between themselves. In the end Brentwood Athletic A ran out winners and will progress to the Regional Competition on the 14th April.
The U19 tournament was a very closely contested competition with Island Boys FC A and Woodham Radars contesting a final. In the end Woodham Radars proved too strong and ran out narrow winners on the day.
